There are certain advantages to blind faith as a social survival strategy -- I play the devil's advocate and drop some off-the-top-of-my-head comments here in response to a post by the blogger, A Rational Being. ARB's got some other interesting entries on the same general subject, so check them out.
A while back, I complained about the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in Seattle that it didn't include in its list of inductees (among others) Philip K. Dick. I just now found out that the Museum inducted Dick (along with Steven Speilberg and Ray Harryhausen) as part of its class of 2005, which goes some ways to overcoming my disappointment with the institution.
Philip K. Dick is considered to be one of the most important figures in 20th-century American science fiction. He was brilliantly inventive, gaining access to imaginative realms which no other writer of science fiction had reached.
Dick's paranoia about godlike manipulations of consensual reality marks a theme he would obsessively repeat, just as the confusion of humans and mechanical simulacra might be considered one particular variant of the major theme that runs right through his work: the juxtaposition of two "levels of reality" -- one "objectively" determined, the other a world of appearances imposed upon characters.
For some time now (at least ten years, since the movie “Clueless” popularized the “whatever” gesture, made with the thumb and forefinger of both hands, to form the letter “W”), “whatever” has been the bane of anyone trying to persuade an adversary or a child of something that this adversary or child would prefer not to be persuaded of. “Whatever” is as incendiary as it is nonchalant; the nonchalance is what makes it incendiary. “Whatever” turns disengagement into something withering and mean.
Is there anything more annoying in everyday civil conversation than being blown off with "Whatever"? It's the wave of the hand, the shrug of the shoulders and the turning away, the denial of legitimacy, the non-specific put-down that's too bored to do any real work. Whether it comes from a teenager or an adult, an opponent or someone supposed to be a friend, I find it infuriating, and my response is to just shut down.
Anyone who thinks I merit a "whatever" doesn't merit my continued attention, at least not then and there. If the word is wielded with the purpose of shutting down the conversation, then it works, but the cost is perhaps greater then realized at the time, for "whatever" not only shuts it down now, it lingers on to squealch it for the immediate future as well.

the story so far
unfutz: toiling in almost complete obscurity for almost 1500 days
If you read unfutz at least once a week, without fail, your teeth will be whiter and your love life more satisfying.
If you read it daily, I will come to your house, kiss you on the forehead, bathe your feet, and cook pancakes for you, with yummy syrup and everything.
(You might want to keep a watch on me, though, just to avoid the syrup ending up on your feet and the pancakes on your forehead.)
Finally, on a more mundane level, since I don't believe that anyone actually reads this stuff, I make this offer: I'll give five bucks to the first person who contacts me and asks for it -- and, believe me, right now five bucks might as well be five hundred, so this is no trivial offer.
